Thomas Francis Meagher Division #1

Monthly meetings of the Thomas Francis Meagher Division of the AOH are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2201 Chestnut, off of Old Airport Road, behind Pomp's Tire Service.

Requirements for joining the AOH include being some degree of Irish descent and a practicing Catholic. For membership and initiation, an initiation fee of $20.00 is required, while annual dues are $50.00 per year.

The Thomas Francis Meagher Division was established on November 14, 1984, with fifteen original members. The first slate of officers for the Division were:

A revival of Hibernianism began in Helena in 1984 with a new unit named the Thomas Francis Meagher Division, which soon had 120 members. Subsequently, five more Montana units sprang to life, until now the spirit and dedication of the Hibernian concept has a strong foothold. Within that time, new or revived divisions arose in Butte, Kalispell, Missoula, Great Falls, and Billings for a total of seven statewide, numbering over 600 members. Meanwhile, a state board was created to govern the membership. Today in Montana, Hibernianism is strong and healthy.

The Helena Hibernians dedicated themselves, among other things, to reviewing the biography of Thomas Francis Meagher for truth and honesty regarding his presence in Montana’s history, a story intentionally and badly distorted over the decades after his death.
